Asphalt & SMA driveways

Motorway-grade asphalt, laid on your driveway

Standard tarmac ravels at the edges and ruts where the cars sit — then it's patches and re-laying inside a decade. Stone mastic asphalt is built to a tighter, denser spec: the same surface that takes 40-tonne lorries and airport jets. It shrugs off your two cars for decades, from €40–€75/m².

What it is

A tighter, tougher cousin of tarmac

Asphalt and stone mastic asphalt (SMA) are engineered bituminous surfaces, but where standard tarmac is graded for value, SMA is gap-graded — a high proportion of strong, interlocking coarse stone held together by a rich mortar of bitumen and stabilising fibres. The result is a denser, tighter mat with very little void, the same specification engineers choose for motorways and runways.

On a driveway that translates into a closed, fine-textured surface that sheds water, resists oil and fuel drips, and — crucially — won't rut where your wheels always land. It costs a little more than basic tarmac, but for many Irish homeowners the longer life and lower upkeep make it the smarter spend.

  • Commercial-grade rut and crack resistance
  • Denser, finer closed surface than standard tarmac
  • Machine-laid for a flat, professional finish
  • Sheds water fast — resists fuel and oil staining
Smooth dense asphalt driveway surface with fine even texture

Pros

  • Tighter & tougher than tarmac
  • Resists rutting & cracking
  • 15–25 year lifespan
  • Fine, premium black finish

Worth knowing

  • Dearer than standard tarmac
  • Not permeable — needs drainage
  • Best machine-laid by a crew

What you'll pay in 2026

Supplied and laid, by typical Irish installers. SMA and finer wearing courses sit at the upper end. Removing an old surface adds roughly €25–€40/m² in groundwork.

How it's installed

Engineered base, machine-laid wearing course

1

Excavate & base

We dig out to depth and lay a compacted stone sub-base set to the right falls — the foundation that lets a dense SMA surface last 25 years.

2

Binder & SMA layer

A binder course goes down first, then the stone mastic wearing course is machine-laid hot and rolled tight for a dense, even mat.

3

Roll, cool & done

Final compaction locks the stone together. It cools within hours, you drive on it that evening — and no deposit is paid until you're happy.

Asphalt FAQ

Your questions, answered

How much does an asphalt driveway cost in Ireland?
€40–€75/m² supplied and laid. A typical 40m² two-car drive is roughly €1,600–€3,000. The premium over standard tarmac buys a denser, longer-lasting surface. Compare surfaces in the cost guide.
What is SMA asphalt?
Stone mastic asphalt — a gap-graded mix where coarse stone interlocks within a rich bitumen-and-fibre mortar. It's the motorway and runway surface, prized for resisting rutting and lasting longer than ordinary tarmac.
Is asphalt better than tarmac?
It's tighter, denser and more rut-resistant, with a finer closed surface that sheds water and resists oil. It costs a little more but generally lasts longer with less upkeep. See tarmac to compare.
How long does asphalt last?
15–25 years on a proper base. The interlocked stone matrix resists cracking and rutting; an occasional seal keeps it watertight and dark.
