Gravel driveways

The budget driveway that drains itself and never floods

A sealed driveway turns into a sheet of water in every downpour, and a full block-paved drive can cost thousands you'd rather not spend. Gravel solves both: water soaks straight through, planners love it, and you get a smart rustic finish for a fraction of the price — from €25–€50/m².

What it is

Loose stone done properly — not just tipped on the mud

A good gravel driveway is more than a load of pea gravel on bare ground. It's a compacted stone sub-base, a geotextile membrane to stop the stone sinking into the soil, and a stabilising grid or honeycomb that holds the decorative gravel in place so it doesn't rut under tyres or scatter onto the road. Done that way it stays firm, level and tidy for years.

It's the cheapest all-weather surface there is, and one of the most planning-friendly: because rain drains straight through, a gravel drive is naturally SUDS-compliant. Want the rustic look with none of the loose stone underfoot? Resin-bonded gravel fixes the same decorative aggregate into a clear resin for a firm, weed-free finish — a half-step up from loose gravel toward a fully resin-bound surface.

  • The lowest-cost all-weather driveway surface
  • Permeable & SUDS-friendly — usually inside planning exemptions
  • Easy to refresh — just rake in a top-up load
  • Crunch underfoot is a natural, low-cost security feature

How it's installed

Membrane, grid, then the decorative stone

1

Dig out & sub-base

We excavate, lay a geotextile membrane and compact a stone sub-base so the finished surface stays firm and free-draining underfoot.

2

Lay the grid

A gravel-grid or honeycomb stabiliser is clipped down across the base — this is what keeps the stone from migrating, rutting or drifting to the edges.

3

Spread & level

Your chosen decorative gravel is spread and raked level into the grid. Walk and drive on it straight away — no deposit until you're happy.

Gravel FAQ

Your questions, answered

How much does a gravel driveway cost in Ireland?
€25–€50/m² supplied and laid — the most budget-friendly all-weather surface. A typical 40m² two-car drive is roughly €1,000–€2,000. See the full cost guide.
Is gravel permeable and planning-friendly?
Yes — water soaks straight through into a permeable sub-base, which is SUDS-friendly and usually keeps you inside planning exemptions. See our planning guide.
How do I stop the gravel migrating?
A geotextile membrane plus a gravel-grid stabiliser holds the stone in place so it won't rut or scatter. Resin-bonded gravel goes further, fixing the stone into clear resin for a firm, loose-free finish.
How long does gravel last?
10–15 years, and it's the easiest surface to refresh — a top-up load of matching stone raked level brings it back to new for very little cost.
